Effective Tuesday January, 15, Sandi Jackson, 7th Ward alderman and wife of former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., will resign from the Chicago City Council. The alderwoman faxed her resignation letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel today from Washington D.C.
The Mayor’s Office released the letter to the public (below). After her husband’s own resignation last November and news of a possible federal investigation, Jackson stated she planned to finish her term and would only resign if something “catastrophic happens.” But residents in the 7th Ward questioned if Jackson was suitable for the job given the alderwoman missed several crucial council meetings last year, earning the highest absentee record in the council. That group subsequently initiated a campaign to “sack Sandi.”
In her resignation letter, Jackson said she is dealing with painful family health matters and could not commit all her energies to the City Council position. Read the full text here:
