With the help of the Illinois attorney general’s office Catalyst Chicago education magazine obtained and charted Chicago Public Schools truancy data, school by school, showing steep increases in truancy and absenteeism at most CPS elementary schools.
CPS announced an increase in overall district truancy and absenteeism in May, but did not release the data per school until Catalyst requested help from the Illinois Office of the Attorney General in getting CPS to honor a Freedom of Information Act request.
The report shows which schools contribute most to the overall truancy increase. Chronic absenteeism has risen at 80 percent of elementary schools in three years, the data shows.
