Users of the hyperlocal social networking site EveryBlock are still upset after recieving a surprising email Thursday afternoon, which announced the site would be “closing its doors” for good.
In a final blog post, the “EveryBlock Team” referenced the increasing challenges of monetizing online news, leading many to believe money, or lack thereof, was a major factor in the decision. NBC owns the citizen-driven news site, acquired by MSNBC.com in 2009 from founder Adrian Holovaty.
Some saw EveryBlock as a beacon of hope for online news. What started as a Chicago-based crime mapping site evolved into neighborhood discussion boards, announcements and crime reports .
Over one thousand people commented on the post in 24 hours, expressing shock, disappointment and even anger. Many said they didn’t like the bombshell. Others, hoping to be the next EveryBlock, took advantage of the opportunity.
Where are Chicago EveryBlock users to turn, now? Sound off in the comments.
