Jesse Sharkey, vice president of the Chicago Teachers Union, will take over duties for president of the organization as Karen Lewis recovers.
Sharkey gave few details on Lewis’ health status during a press conference Thursday afternoon.
“Karen Lewis has a serious illness,” Sharkey said, but said he could not elaborate beyond that, per Lewis’ wishes.
Lewis underwent emergency surgery Wednesday after being hospitalized Monday from “discomfort.” The CTU president was a potential candidate for Chicago mayor.
