Mayor Rahm Emanuel is standing by the city’s decision to give hiring preference to Chicago Public School alumni who apply to become Chicago firefighters.
“I want to make sure the doors of opportunity are open to all — that everybody feels they have a fair shot,” Emanuel told the Sun-Times.
A group of firefighters has hired a lawyer to possibly challenge the practice, calling the preference unfair.
Meanwhile, Chicago Teachers Union president and potential contender for mayor Karen Lewis blasted the mayor’s stance in a Sun-Times oped. She called the mayor’s plan “a stunt.”
But the mayor disagreed saying his plan would improve graduation and college entrance rates.
